HOMEWORK - Science Project

Find attached:
1) Final Time line for Science Project - given to students November 15/16
(All students received a copy and most students received a personalized copy showing their progress.)

2) RUBRIC for the Science Project which will be worth THREE Assessment Task grades and serve as a Final Assessment Task for the 2nd Quarter.

3) TEMPLATE for typing out the Science Project with Instructions of what to type in each section.

HOMEWORK Science Project:

Find attached a worksheet to be completed when the student is done with collecting DATA for their Science Project (home experiment).

Students should get the Science Project - Draft of Report - Data Analysis/Conclusion as soon as they are ready.

HOMEWORK:

This is a descriptor sheet about the Science Project - REPORT Background Research.
The students may use it for notetaking but do not have to turn in the sheet.

On the due date, November 28 or 29 (depending on class periods), the students should turn in a 1 - 2 PAGE REPORT on background information about their Science Project (home experiment).

Attached is a PowerPoint for NOTES on Termite Biology.

Students will be working on this in class, starting 11/18 for most classes.

It is uncertain when the note taking will be done.

This lab was began on Monday/Tuesday of this week. Today (Friday, 11/18) students were given time to finish their Data Analysis and Conclusion.
If students did not finish their write up, the instruction sheet was given to them to take home with their Notebook and to finish at home.

ASSESSMENT TASK (Quiz) on Cells and TREE MAP on Cell Parts (attached) DUE.

It is part of the continuing process for the student's individual experiment.

Student received back and refined their Science Project: DRAFT OF REPORT - Procedure worksheets back on 11/2 or 11/3. Time was given in class to "fix up," make data tables, and/or complete the Procedure Worksheet.

STUDENTS SHOULD BEGIN THEIR EXPERIMENT THIS WEEKEND, 11/5 - 11/6, using their Procedure which was returned to them with many comments.

CLASS WORK:

Starting on Monday, October 17 (or Tuesday, October 18), the students have been taking NOTES on Insects.

Find attached the WORKSHEETS the students are filling out and the PowerPoint that the students are taking the NOTES. We will finish all this note taking on Friday, October 21 or Monday, October 24.

It is ALL being done IN CLASS and does not need to be done at home unless the students have missed all this week.

The students are to complete the rest based on their Science Project (individual experiment).

HOMEWORK:
This Worksheet (attached) was given on Thursday or Friday before Fall Break. (Sorry for the late posting but students may still turn in the assignment.)

The students are to find 3 sources for Research on their Science Project (individual experiment). Then the students must write out the reference information using the format on the back. Then the students must write out one fact from each source and summarize what was found.

A Final Assessment Task, a TYPED copy of a full Lab Report Write Up on INVESTIGATION: Marble Cars.

(Please find attached the Handout "Final Assessment Task - INVESTIGATION: Marble Cars".)

Students have been working, and will continue working, on this "project" (INVESTIGATION: Marble Cars) in class all of this week, 9/26 - 9/30.

Due to Market Day on Friday, students in Period 6 will not meet. Those students may come to see me to turn in their Final Assessment Task - INVESTIGATION: Marble Cars or request to come and see me during Market Day, period 6.

IN CLASS - HOMEWORK

Beginning this weekend and continuing until the last week of 1st Semester, students will be working on a long term project - Science Project.

There will be periodic steps and assignments (in class and at home) along the way until the long term project is due at the end of the 1st Semester.

The first step is for this Science Project is deciding on a scientific question (problem) which can be answered by gathering evidence in a quantitative way. Today students were given a LETTER introducing a long term project - Science Project and the FIRST accompanying handouts/worksheets.

Please find attached the LETTER to parents (with "Parent's Guide to Science Projects" on the back), the first Project worksheet, "Science Project DRAFT of REPORT - Purpose and Question" (with Benchmarks on the back) which is due on Monday 9/26, and "Science Project Proposal Form" (with Benchmarks on the back) which is due on Friday, 9/30.

In Periods 2, 3, 4, and 5, we discussed what types of experiments NOT to do. This included a discussion about "no vertebrate danger" experiments. We reviewed many types of vertebrates with which the students will NOT experiment, e.g. fish, birds, cats, dogs, rodents, rabbits, lizards (geckos and chameleons).

IN CLASS:
Students have been working on an INVESTIGATION : Drops on a Penny.

Find attached the Instruction Sheet for this INVESTIGATION.

Students were given time in class to write up the complete INVESTIGATION but may need more time for the Data Analysis and Conclusion sections.

Attached is an Investigation sheet (Physical and Chemical Changes) that students were working on for about 2 - 3 days. Students had time to do ALL parts in class.
IF more time is needed they may use this sheet.

CLASS WORK:

CIRCLE MAP Physical Changes/Chemical Changes (attached) is being done IN CLASS. Began on Wednesday, August 31 for Period 2 and Thursday, September 1 for Periods 3, 4, 5, and 6. Will be completed on Friday, September 2 for all classes.

HOMEWORK:

Attached is HOMEWORK SLIP Three Scientific Questions, Three Scientific Hypotheses.

In class, the SLIP was reviewed. A short activity was done where observations were made outdoors and then, as a class, the observations were made into Scientific Questions (Problems).

NO research is to be done.
NO experiments are to be done.
NO answers are to be made, except in the form of a predicted "guess" - the Hypotheses.

CLASS WORK:

INVESTIGATION Making Glue, for most classes, was set up and begun on Monday, August 22 or August 23. The investigation was carried out and for some groups/classes repeated throughout the class periods of the week.

Students began writing up the remainder (Data Analysis and Conclusion) of the Investigation as they finished. The majority of students in Periods 2 and 4 were finished on Friday, August 26. Students who were not finished were instructed to take home the Instruction Sheet (attached) to finish the write up.

Periods 3, 5, and 6 still need some class time to finish their write up (Data Analysis and Conclusion). All classes will be given the total of about 45 minutes of class time to finish their write up (Data Analysis and Conclusion).

Notebooks will be graded beginning the end of this week, Friday, September 2 and going into the weekend. This means the write up needs to be finished by this time.

If for some reason, students need the weekend to finish their write up, when Notebooks are brought back on Tuesday, these should be given directly to Mrs. Link.

QUIZ:

QUIZ in all classes on Science Equipment on FRIDAY, 8/26.
Use the NOTES: Science Equipment in your Notebook to study.
There was a copy of the Power Point for NOTES: Science Equipment posted on a previous day.

CLASS WORK:

NOTES Science Equipment were taken. (Very large PowerPoint attached below)
Students saw each piece of science equipment and copied notes as written.
Extra cautions and/or uses for certain pieces of equipment were also discussed and/or demonstrated.

QUIZ:

Students will have a QUIZ on the Science Safety Rules.

The Science Safety Rules sheet was given out in class last week. A copy may be downloaded from a previous "Homework" entry or on the "Link" - Link Class Syllabus and Class Information.

CLASS WORK:

On Monday or Tuesday, depending on the class period, students first looked at and began to review the handout - "Moanalua Middle School SCIENCE SAFETY RULES AND BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES." (attached below)

For 2 class periods, students reviewed the Handout. Rules were read over and explained.

As a review to reinforce importance and understanding of the rules, a group activity was done to choose and create a Circle Map of the most important rules.

After the second class period of review (Tuesday for Periods 2, 3, and 4 and Wednesday for Periods 5 and 6), students are to take "Moanalua Middle School
SCIENCE SAFETY RULES AND BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES" home. At home, students should review and discuss this with their parents and get a parent signature and bring back the bottom portion of the paper.
